Atatürk Cultural Center (AKM)

Werner Sobek was responsible for the facade engineering of the new Atatürk Cultural Centre in Istanbul. In addition to an opera and a theatre hall, the AKM houses an art gallery as well as various multi-purpose halls and meeting rooms.

The New Cultural Heart of Istanbul

The walls of the main building on Taksim Square are clad in natural stone both inside and out. With its highly transparent facade, the cultural centre opens up towards the square. The facade is around 25 metres high and 50 metres wide and is braced by slender glass fins.

The new Atatürk Cultural Centre is the largest cultural institution of its kind in Türkiye. The building replaced the old Atatürk Cultural Centre and was opened on 29 October 2021, Türkiye’s national holiday.
