S21 – Bonatzbau
As part of the Stuttgart 21 railway project, the almost 100-year-old listed entrance building of Stuttgart’s main railway station is being thoroughly modernised. Although the existing building will be almost completely gutted, the exterior of the so-called Bonatz Building, which is so characteristic of the cityscape, will be preserved.
Revitalisation of an Architectural Monument
After the gutting, a new solid building with a basement and up to four upper floors will be constructed inside. The new building, with a lowered foundation, connects directly to the existing structure from the inside. Werner Sobek is responsible for the structural engineering, facade engineering and construction pit enclosure.
The conversion will provide passengers with ground-level access to the platforms of the new underground station, which is being built directly next to the Bonatz building.
