Bridge Aalen

The direct connection of the Stadtoval area to the city centre of Aalen via a pedestrian bridge over the tracks is an important prerequisite for the success of the urban development project.

The Aalen municipal council selected Werner Sobek’s design for this task. The new bridge swings over the tracks like a wide, elegantly recessed ribbon. The structure is clad with wooden slats made of planed larch wood, and the PMMA-coated flooring is both non-slip and highly durable.

Sweeping spiral staircases at the two end points minimise the access areas in the public space and elegantly mark the access points to the bridge. The visible above-ground section consists of a reinforced concrete cylinder and a reinforced concrete spiral staircase.

LED elements have been integrated into the bridge railings to optimally illuminate the entire carriageway. Effect lighting on the outside emphasises the sculptural character of the footbridge in the dark.

An Exciting, Elegantly Understated Ribbon

The Stadtoval is one of the most important projects for the development of Aalen’s city centre in the coming decades. In the immediate vicinity of the main railway station, around 220 to 250 residential units, commercial space, cultural facilities and open spaces with a high quality of stay are being created.
