Schauspielhaus Düsseldorf

Due to structural defects, the facade and roof of the Schauspielhaus Düsseldorf had to be completely renovated. Werner Sobek was responsible for the structural design and facade planning for this demanding renovation. The roof was not subject to any requirements with regard to the protection of historical monuments, so it was completely renewed and replaced by a warm roof (in some areas as a green roof) that corresponds to today’s standards.

The corrugated iron facade, on the other hand, had to match the original state in terms of shape and colour, in accordance with the requirements of the preservation order. For this purpose, aluminium sheets with lengths of up to 16 m were specially made for the Schauspielhaus. All doors and skylights as well as the steel and glass facade on the ground floor were also reproduced true to the original and at the same time with a high thermal standard.

The Schauspielhaus Düsseldorf was designed by Bernhard Pfau in the 1960s. The large sculptural form contrasts with the neighbouring Dreischeibenhaus. The Schauspielhaus building belongs to the organic architecture of post-war modernism. Its facade is dark on the ground floor and slightly recessed. The upper floors, on the other hand, have a light corrugated metal facade with curved forms.
