The Niederfinow ship lift in the northeast of Germany is a full 60 m high and 130 m long. It enables inland vessels travelling between Szczecin in the east and Berlin in the west to overcome a height difference of 36 m within five minutes! The lift can even accommodate ships with a length of up to 110 m (“large Rhine ship”) and a total weight of 3,500 tonnes. The connection to the upper outer harbour is made via a 65 m long canal bridge. Werner Sobek was responsible for the structural engineering of the building frame of this extraordinary project.
