U4 Zum Grasbrook

Grasbrook Gateway

Werner Sobek and the GRBV engineers are responsible for the structural engineering of the Grasbrook Gate project. This rail bridge development consisting of three individual structures will extend the U4 suburban railway line to the city’s new Grasbrook district. In devising the project, Danish architectural firm Cobe A/S employed a uniform stylistic vocabulary that also informed the design principles behind the trio of structures (a viaduct, a bridge over the river Elbe and a station at Moldauhafen harbour) that make up the development overall. Each of the steel structures used within the project consists of a truss and a box girder.

Steel Structures with a Uniform Design Language

The Grasbrook Gateway is being built for the “Leap over the Elbe” — a major infrastructure project that aims to implement a sustainable urban development strategy in the heart of Hamburg. Extending the reach of the existing U4 suburban railway line forms part of this strategy and represents a key building block of both the city’s transition to sustainable transportation and the climate-friendly development of its Grasbrook and Veddel districts.
