DOMiD Museum Selma Cologne
The design for Selma Museum in Cologne incorporates doors, rails, crane runways and surfaces from the existing structure through a few, but targeted interventions. Werner Sobek is responsible for the structural design, building physics, MEP and sustainability during the refurbishment. The museum is an initiative of DOMiD, the Documentation Center and Museum on Migration in Germany, which was founded by migrants in 1990. It is being built in the 10,000 m² former factory hall 70 of KHD-Werke in Cologne and is intended to be a unique cultural venue that portrays the history of German migration society.
Modular timber fixtures and recyclable materials
On the one hand, the design features modular timber fixtures and on the other hand, it emphasizes the strengths of the existing facilities and uses their elements. The planned materials, such as wood and polycarbonate, were selected to ensure their recyclability.
What is unique about the exhibition space is that it can be explored in “free flow”, i.e. there is no set order for the tour and the circular arrangement gives visitors access from all directions, allowing different perspectives and points of view on historical events.
