Bridge Municipal Hospital Karlsruhe
In February 2025, the new bridge between the Karlsruhe Municipal Hospital and the Helios Clinic for Cardiac Surgery was officially opened. Engineered by Werner Sobek AG and designed by caspar.schmitzmorkramer, the bridge is a highly functional piece of infrastructure that impresses with its technical and aesthetic qualities.
The bridge spans the four-lane Franz-Lust-Straße, including tram tracks, and connects the helipad of the Municipal Hospital directly to the Helios Clinic. Emergency patients can thus be transported directly from the rescue helicopter to the adjacent clinic. The new connection also makes inner-city patient transfers between the two clinics much easier, faster, and more comfortable.
Expressively Reduced Forkstruts
The 80-meter-long structure forms a gentle S-curve that blends harmoniously into the street space. It is supported by characteristic forkstruts for that the bridge spans the road and track area. The appearance of the bridge changes depending on the lighting conditions: during the day it looks like a white ribbon, while at night, when backlit or illuminated from within, the structure stands out and movement becomes visible as silhouettes.
Particular attention was paid to integration into the urban space: the expressively reduced struts with their tree-like appearance refer to the plane tree avenue on Franz-Lust-Straße. At the same time, the bridge curve was designed in such a way that the trees remain unaffected.
