In a Nutshell: Project Manager Roman Gatsko talks about Revitalisation of the Berlin Postbahnhof

Our office is responsible for the structural engineering of the conversion of the Postbahnhof at Berlin’s Ostbahnhof into an office complex. The four listed buildings from 1907/08 will be extended and will receive mezzanines and green roofs. A smaller building will be completely rebuilt.

In a short interview, our colleague Roman Gatsko answers the most important questions about this beautiful project.

What is special about this project?

That the track bed is inside the building – you don’t see that often! And that this is a combination of old and new buildings. And last but not least, of course, the architects’ exciting plans!

What difficulties arose during the work?

Due to the numerous conversions of the building in the past, the supporting structure is very inhomogeneous. It was therefore not easy to find the right and functioning solutions to implement the architects’ concept in terms of planning.

What can be learned from this for future projects?

We have been able to gain a lot of experience in projects such as the Postbahnhof in the field of “building in existing structures” and had to find suitable special solutions in a short time. We will also benefit from this in future projects!
