ILEK

Frei Otto – Pioneer of Lightweight Construction

To mark the 100th birthday of Frei Otto (1925–2015), the Institute for Lightweight Design (ILEK) is dedicating a two-day symposium to the Leonberg-based visionary, innovative architect, and master of lightweight construction.

The conference honors the extraordinary spirit of experimentation, works, methods, and international networks of Frei Otto, who laid the foundation for today’s ILEK with the establishment of the Institute for Lightweight Surface Structures (IL) in 1964.

The IL was headed by Werner Sobek from 1994, who merged it with Jörg Schlaich‘s institute in 2001 to form the ILEK. Our colleague Lucio Blandini has been head of the ILEK since 2020. Lightweight construction according to the Stuttgart School is of fundamental importance to our office – so we are all the more delighted to be able to attend this interesting event not only as participants, but also to actively support it through sponsorship.
