A Region on the Path to Climate Neutrality

With the phase-out of coal in 2030, an era is coming to an end in the “Rheinisches Revier“. The economic and structural programme for the post-opencast mining era envisages the transformation of the region into a climate-neutral region. This offers a unique opportunity to systematically transform the entire region step by step in a sustainable manner. In addition to the development of lakes, the innovation park for renewable energies and the International Garden Show in 2037, resource-optimised, climate-neutral urban spaces are to be created.

The “Excellence Region for Sustainable Construction” project aims to promote sustainable construction methods in the region, with a particular focus on resource-efficient and circular construction. In cooperation with Aachen University of Applied Sciences and the city of Mönchengladbach, the LANDFOLGE Garzweiler special-purpose association is seeking to establish a multidisciplinary network. This will facilitate exchange and cooperation on various aspects of sustainable construction. As visible examples, impulse buildings are to be constructed on the edge of the open-cast mine and in the Lürrip district of Mönchengladbach, which will clearly demonstrate innovative building products and processes and serve as platforms for knowledge exchange.

Werner Sobek Green Technologies was commissioned to provide consulting services for process and quality management with regard to sustainability. The sustainability aspects will be tested and sustainable planning and construction processes will be presented transparently on the basis of the planning and construction of four impulse buildings. In addition to best practice examples, various event formats will be organised to promote knowledge exchange with all regional stakeholders and provide insights into new technologies and developments.
