Our Mission: Sustainable Engineering and Design

Sustainable engineering and design are essential for the future of our planet. Man-made climate change, the continuing growth of the world’s population and the increasing consumption of natural resources are global challenges that affect us all.

The building industry has a special role to play in tackling the problems ahead, as it is responsible for a large proportion of all emissions and resource consumption worldwide.

Building for Future Generations

We see ourselves as pioneers for a future-proof environment. Our aim is to create a built environment that is breathtakingly beautiful. Which is serving the interests of future generations. Therefore Werner Sobek wants to realize emissions-free structures. Since we will have to build for more people, using less material in the future.

This is why our exceptional designs, innovative structural solutions, and holistic concepts are made to minimise our impact on the environment. Werner Sobek stands for engineering, design, and sustainability worldwide.

Affiliations and Memberships

Here are some of the associations, institutions and activities with which we have been closely associated for years. Werner Sobek is involved in many of them on a voluntary basis or through donations. We see it as our task, to promote the next generation and to advance a sustainably planned environment.

Roland Bechmann Vorstand der Werner Sobek AG

CTBUH Germany

Our managing director Roland Bechmann is head of the German section of the CTBUH (Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat). CTBUH is the world’s leading resource for professionals focused on the inception, design, construction, and operation of tall buildings and future cities. The German chapter organizes conferences and events in various German cities. It was founded in 2019.

DGNB logo

DGNB

Werner Sobek is one of the founding members of the DGNB (German Sustainable Building Council). From 2008 to 2010 Prof. Werner Sobek was president of this important association for issues such as the definition and certification of sustainability in built environment. Werner Sobek regularly advises architects and builders on issues related to sustainability certification according to DGNB, BNB and other systems.

ILEK

Our managing director Lucio Blandini is also head of ILEK (Institute for Lightweight Structures and Conceptual Design) at University of Stuttgart. In this capacity he directs the education of architects and engineers. Furthermore, Blandini is responsible for the research in areas of lightweight construction with concrete, adaptivity and digital life cycle optimisation. As head of ILEK, Blandini follows in the footsteps of renowned personalities such as Fritz Leonhardt, Frei Otto, Jörg Schlaich, and Werner Sobek.

CRC1244

D1244

D1244 is the largest adaptive building in the world. It is placed on the Vaihingen campus of University of Stuttgart. The building is part of SFB 1244 (Collaborative Research Centre ‘Adaptive Building Skins and Structures for the Built Environment of Tomorrow’). Despite only having a footprint of 5 m x 5 m, this 12-storey tower reaches an approximate height of 36.5 m. Werner Sobek − the project’s structural engineer and general planner − played an instrumental role in developing the unique, innovative building in collaboration with the ILEK (Institute for Lightweight Structures and Conceptual Design) and other research institutes of the University of Stuttgart.

Deutschlandstipendium logo

Deutschlandstipendium

The Deutschlandstipendium is an initiative of Germany’s BMBF (Federal Ministry of Education and Research). It supports talented and high-achieving students. In addition to first-class grades, social commitment and special personal achievements are taken into account in the awarding process. We are pleased to be part of this important programme by sponsoring three scholarship holders per year. Further information on the Deutschlandstipendium can be found here. By the way: We were also involved in the engineering of the new BMBF headquarter.

Aed logo

aed e.V.

Werner Sobek and kindred spirits foundet the aed (Association for the Promotion of Architecture, Engineering and Design in Stuttgart e.V.) in 2004. With its exhibitions, lectures and discussion events, the association offers a platform that aims to promote cooperation between architects, engineers and designers. The non-profit initiative aims to familiarise the general public with the design work of outstanding personalities.

Werner Sobek stands for engineering, design and sustainability worldwide.

Our company has more than 350 employees and is represented internationally. People from more than 40 countries work in our offices, speaking just as many languages. We work on all types of structures and materials. Werner Sobek places particular emphasis on the design and planning of load-bearing structures, facades and technical building equipment, as well as on advice on building physics.

We want to create a built environment that is breathtakingly beautiful. Serving the interests of future generations.
